Upgrading current build to VR-Ready

Go to solution Solved by Slottr,

1. A 6GB 1060 or 1070 would run VR just fine

2. You could upgrade to the 8th gen intel or go to an AMD R5 or R7 processor but the 4770 is still a decent chip.

3. It would help, but not significantly

Hello all,

I will make it really quick. I'm planing to buy an Oculus Rift and to be able to run games on it I also have to upgrade for sure some components of my current build. GPU is the obvious one, but I'm questioning if CPU or other components are also in need of an upgrade.

1.) It would be awesome if you could suggest me the upgrades that I need to do before even been able to play smoothly on VR.

2.) Also some future upgrades that you think are recommended.

3.) And I just remembered while I was writing my current build that I'm still under-clocking two of my RAM sticks to have more RAM. Not at all an expert on this topic, so the question here is; Would I have some noticeable benefits in swapping the two 1600mhz sticks with two new 1866mhz sticks ?

Current Build:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (I know I should Overclock it :P)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H75
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce Asus DirectCU II OC GTX 780 Ti

GPU Cooler: NZXT G10 and Corsair H55
RAM: 2 x 4GB Corsair Vengeance 1866hmz + 2 x 4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600hmz (Down-clocked at 1600hmz)

Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
PSU: Be Quiet! Straight Power 11 650w 80 plus Gold

2 x 1TB Hard Disk

2 x 120GB SSD
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10

and a bunch of different Fans

Please just let me know if you need more information or if i wasn't clear enough, and I apologize for my English it's my 3rd language.

Thank you all for the help in advance :D

I would first want to ask what games you want to play one CR, since there aren’t too many that are actually good...

Assuming you’re set on going with it, I would look for at minimum a 1070. You can likely find one used for under 300 euros. Possibly new too if there are good cyber Monday sales around you. As you said, a good overclock on your CPU, RAM also wouldn’t hurt. I can’t speak to the quality of your PSU, but if it’s lower quality I’d get a higher quality one. Great deals rn.

Overall you can just go with a GPU and call it done. Mild OC on the CPU would most likely help, and call it done.

Thanks for the reply, last question I swear :) Would upgrading the current mother board also be a good idea ?

And worse. Half the VRAM, lower core count. It’s a different card, that’s why it’s cheaper. An RX 480/580 is the same price and better
