So I'd like to build a small storage server. Just for me and maybe 2-4 friends. I need to be able to access it from different places so I need to open a port probably, I know how to do almost everything except I don't know what parts I need. As I heard you don't need a really good cpu. So if someone could just guide me in the right general direction. I want to have just 1-4tb of storage I'm hoping this to be on the low end side under $350?? If someone knows a lot about this please send me a pcpartpicker link with the specs. I don't plan on doing a raid array yet. Just a basic storage server (On board raid if the mobo has it built in until I buy a raid card) I just don't know the software end of it. Like what os and stuff I have an XP key and Disc so should I run like xp and run filezilla or is there a whole os for this type of thing? Sorry I'm a bit of a storage server noob.

Gaming Rig - Excalibur - CPU: i5 6600k @ 4.1GHz, CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo, Mobo: MSI Gaming M3 RAM: 16GB Corsair @2400MHz, GPU: EVGA 1060, Case: NZXT Phantom Full Tower (Red)

Get FreeNAS 9.1.1. Install it on a USB 3.0 (or 2.0 would work) flash drive. That is your boot drive.

Get an AMD Phenom II X2 (or something similar), underclock it to 2.0 GHz. Get a motherboard with ECC and 8GB of RAM (1600 MHz preferably). 4GB of RAM would work, but 8 is preferable.

Get whatever drives you want.

This is a build I made some time ago. There may be better options, but it's a good baseline build imo. You'll need to find a different CPU though. Unless you look on Ebay.

If you want to get it under $350, you can just ignore ECC entirely. Here: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/TremorAcePV/saved/3nKm That's the best I can do without worrying about the thing catching on fire and burning down your house.

That should give you what you need.

FreeNAS 9.1.1 can kind of do everything you need. You can install plugins to handle whatever feature you want. i.e. Media streaming server, Bit Torrent client, etc etc.

There are ways to make it so that you can access it from the Internet, but you'll have to research that on your own. I couldn't get it to work, but I didn't try very hard (my upload speed is 75KB/s, so I see no point).

If you have any questions about setting things up, let me know. Lifehacker has a guide for setting up FreeNAS 8 (the latest is 9.1.1 but they aren't very different).

Yes, that would work. I didn't think of using a HAF Stacker Mini-ITX case. Smart. :)

Can you mix and match in FreeNas? I didn't know that.

I wouldn't really recommend using a mini ITX case for a server especially if he plans on getting more drives in the future because the airflow will be restricted. Just my opinion.

I'm... not sure what you mean. Mix and Match? What? Hard Drives?

I personally don't worry much about air flow for servers (NAS servers I mean). An underclocked Phenom II X2 or X4 doesn't even get to 50C under load with air cooling. I wouldn't worry about the drives getting hot. Unless they are just bad drives.

Not that I can see. Other than getting parts that I wouldn't trust not to explode or simply break.
