My new pc build, tell me what you guys think:

  • CPU
    i7 3770 (non-k)---------------------------------------------$90 (used)
  • Motherboard
    Gigabyte GA-Z77P-D3----------------------------------$73.99 (used)
  • RAM
    G.SKILL 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 2133mhz----------$104.99
  • GPU
EVGA GTX 1080 FTW---------------------------------$319.50 (used, 2yr left on warranty)
  • Case
    Fractal Design Define R5-----------------------------$121.98
  • Storage
    240GB SSD + 2TB HDD-----------------------------$109.98
  • PSU
    EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3-------------------------$55.27
  • Cooling
    Cryorig H7----------------------------------------------$36.50
  • Operating System
    Windows 7 Professional----------------------------$15

    Total-----------------------------------------------------$927.21

The CPU is overclocked to 4.1ghz across all cores, and runs up to 4.3ghz on a single core. I achieved this by raising the max turbo by 400mhz on all cores, this is a feature that was on non-k 2nd and 3rd gen i5s and i7s, it's known as a "limited overclock" and the feature is absent on Haswell and higher.

This build may not make much sense, because I could have just went with an 8th gen i3 for a little more money, but the 3770 is better for multi-threaded tasks. I get 750-760cb in Cinebench, and I get 150-160cb on single core. The GTX 1080 is kind of overkill, and definitely bottlenecks the 3770 a bit since I only game at 1080p, but I got a good deal on it, and if I want to upgrade to 1440p in the future then I'll have a good gpu for it.

I downgraded from a 6700K and 1080 Ti because I don't use my computer enough to justify keeping such expensive hardware that will just go down in cost in the near future, so I'm selling off most of my old system.

I bought my 6700K for $299 USD about a year ago, and they sell for $230+ on ebay, so I don't have any regerts.

I bought my 1080 Ti used for $475, sold it for $490.
