If I configured an Apache reverse proxy on the same hardware and instance of Windows that I have the application intended to run behind it on does this defeat the purpose of the reverse proxy?

Let's see. If a web server uses a proxy on a different box, it will get another IP, if you put then on the same boxes they will use the same IP. In which case you've done work for nothing. Meaning yes, it will defeat the purpose.

Kind of depends on what your purpose of running the reverse proxy is.
