Whenever I download something, or install something, my hard drive disk usage is 100%. When I torrent as an example, I can hit 20mbps but the next second it can drop to a few kbps. This isn't because of an internet issue or the lack of seeders, but the hard drive is really struggling with something. The same thing happens when I install something. It can take a very long time, and the disk usage stays at 100% through the entire install. DiskInfo64 says that my Hard drive is good. All my drivers are up to date, including the BIOS.

@kiicki  Some folks disable Superfetch to cure this.  It might be something to play with to see if it helps out.  Google what you lose if you disable Superfetch as I can't remember precisely and don't want to get flamed when I get it wrong.

as is expected, mechanical hard drives are slow and usually bottleneck a download and install process.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

@kiicki  And it might be more work than you want to put in, but you could also short-stroke your HDD.  Linus made a video on it if you need some instruction.

Are you referring to the "How To Optimize Your Hard Drive For Speed" video posted by NCIX Tech Tips?

I don't think the problem is only that the hard drive is slow. it starts off great. Was hitting 50 MB/s write speed, but eventually it just drops, and I don't know why.

And short-stroking could help with that.

That would require me to format my hard drive, and I don't know if that's actually the issue. I'm installing a program atm, and in the beginning it was all good. During the installation the speed just drops heavily. It goes from 0KB/s to 1.1MB/s which is basically nothing. Task manager shows that not much is going on, but yet my hard drive is running at 100%. I do understand that hard drives aren't the fastest, but something is clearly wrong, and I doubt that the solution is to make 2 partition (One for fast speed, and one for not as fast speed)

Yeah, it would be a huge pain in the rear.  Have you tried disabling Superfetch to see if that helps?
