possible dead motherboard

a friend of mine gave me a computer he couldnt get working i found out it had bad ram in one slot and the other slot didnt work at all then i found out that multiple ram chips have died in that slot so does this sound like a motherboard issue or just bad ram

It would appear to be a problem with the motherboard considering the same problem occurred with different ram sticks.
