This is going to be a multiple question or comment post. First my current situation, I have my modem and router in my garage in which I runnimg everything off of wifi. My router is a upgraded net gear that cost about $150 and the modem is provided by the ISP.

My house was built with cat5e cables running through out the house. There are 3 cables that are outside in my cable box that aren't connect to anything yet. When I look under the faceplate in each room I see 2 cables in each that are loose and not connected. After doing amateur testing with some equipment I borrowed it seems that the rooms are connect and my whole house is connected by 3 wires and the rooms are chained together. I have 2 stories and 5 bedrooms for a total of 7 or 8 wall plates.

What I want to do is directly connect my TV's in 2 rooms and my PC. I planned to put connecter on the 3 wires on the outside of my house and plug them into my router. First question is can I plug them into my modem or just into my router. Then I plan on installing faceplate that have 2 Jacks in it and put wires connecting the two Jacks so that the connection will flow between rooms. In the rooms that I need the cable to be attached to something I planned on using a switch to allow me to continue the connection between rooms and also have a 3rd or 4th wire to the devices I need.

Could use some help understanding if there is an easier way and answer silly questions like can I use a modem to plug my 3 main ethernet cables to free up the ports in my router and allow me to relocate it somewhere else in my house. Any help would be appreciated.

You can only plug devices to your router.

The router manages the IP's and network.

The modem only gives you the internet data.

I haven't tried it personnaly but I believe that's the way it works.

For the rest, can you draw us what you want to do?

What would be the best way to draw it? And I am not necessarily sure where each wire goes but yea i can try my best.

What do you mean chained together? Are you talking Ethernet or Coax?

Ethernet cant be "Chained together". Each cable should only have 1 device connected to it, and that cable should be a straight shot between device and router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

The issue is and I am not fully sure how they are all connected by I have 3 wires that are ending on the outside of my house. I see 2 wires in each room (8 plates) and when I was doing my testing I had to connect room X's wires to get room Y too work is most occasions. I can do more extensive testing to further understand what rooms need to be "connected" together in order to reach the rooms I need it in. Also out of the 8 only one room had one wire meaning it was the end of the line. The whole wiring situation was confusing and I had someone here that kinda knew something to help me figure out where the wires went which is why I got even this far.
