Laptop HDD

Okay so back a few years my laptop broke down, and I managed to find it. So I have removed the HDD from my windows laptop HP and I plugged it into my PC, but when I go to file explorer to look at all my drives the new HDD doesn't show up. I don't want to use it for space, I just wanted to retrieve my old files from it. Anyhelp or know if this is possible? My PC is windows 10, and if I remember correctly my laptop was Windows 8

CPU - i7-4790k

GPU - MSI 980 Ti 

Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Memory - 32 GB DDR3

Storage - 3.4 TB

did you connect the laptop HDD properly? Some use a smaller SATA port rather than those on desktops.

 

otherwise go to diskmgmt.msc and see if it shows up there

What did you use to plug in the HDD and what model of HDD is it? Is there any clear signs the drive is powering on and spinning?

Hello, it shows up in disk mgmt but when I go to explore PC file explorer it does not show up there with the rest of my hdd

then all you need to do is assign a drive letter for each of the partitions in the HDD. you can find guides of this in the Internet.

When I go to assign the letter the options are greyed out. The option that says change drive letter and paths. So I tried to do this through CMD and assigned it letter x, but it shows up but only says 196 MB out of 196 MB. The only option available says delete volume but I just want to get the files on my HDDScreenshot_1.thumb.png.892decdbc1e91aa6c9eb3110d26457de.png

just asking because losing capacity drastically (Say it was a 320GB drive) could mean the drive is partly dead.

 

I have no idea why it doesnt let you assign drive letter to the main partition, but Windows File Explorer won't read partitions without a drive letter so that's something you need to do.

 

Maybe mark that main partition as 'in use'? The option above 'assign drive letter' in diskmgmt.msc that is.

doesn't let me mark it, all the options are greyed out except one that says delete volume. This is very odd and hasn't happened with any of my other hdd
