$1700-$2000 Build

Gomojoe

I am looking to build a gaming computer for my 12 year old son.  He is new to gaming, mostly playing Fortnite at the moment, but I would like to make sure it's a system that he can grow into.  I have built one computer before so I have a little experience.  I am looking to build it myself not only to save a little money, but I also want to show my son and have him help where he can.  He is also disabled, with only 4 fingers per hand so any recommendations on peripherals would be appreciated.  He is able to use controllers like the PS4 and Switch, and I know he can use a mouse and keyboard, but maybe not in the most efficient and rapid manner.  I would also like any recommendations on where to buy.  The last computer I just bought everything at once from New Egg.

He doesn't even know anything about resolution/refresh rate and yes it would include the monitor, keyboard, speaker excetra.  Truthfully, with his limited knowledge he would probably be happy with very little, but I am hoping this gets him interested and then he can realize what he has and maybe what he could upgrade it to in the future.

He is not mentally disabled and does really like gaming.  He just hasn't really experienced much in the way of PC gaming.  I really haven't either for many years.

^^^^. Also, even with 4 fingers on each hand he should be able to use a mouse and keyboard if he wants to, most games have an autosprint so you only *need* to use 4 keys (W, A, S, and D), and the mouse has two buttons so all good there. Most games on PC also support controller though, so there's lots of options.

My initial thoughts are to go with a CPU that won't be outdated too soon so I was think i7 Intel.  Then have no clue what most games really need at this point.  The motherboard I would just like to be reliable and have potential for expandability.  I was probably thinking of going with a liquid cooled system.  Don't need any fancy lights or anything but I am sure that would add to the wow factor for him if I add it.

I'd go for a Ryzen CPU if he's not playing at 144Hz, the AM4 platform has been pledged support till 2020. What res/refresh rate were you thinking of? And RGB is pretty easy to add, lots of stuff comes with it standard. If you aren't going for max price to performance, your budget gives you some nice wiggle room to color match everything. Also as far as space goes, do you want a full ATX tower, or an mITX/mATX rig? ATX usually has the most upgradability, but ITX systems are nice and compact.

^^^ For anything 60Hz, go Ryzen, it's much cheaper. Intel wins out if you want 144hz though.

What maintenance issues are there with liquid coolers?

First and foremost: You have to refill the reservoir, and if anything goes wrong (corrosion, leaking, etc) that's just more money spent. AIO's for the CPU only like the Corsair H100i v2 are mostly safe from those issues and require no maintenance.

Here's what I think would work for you:

This rig would be 1080p 144hz or 1440p 60hz capable on Ultra settings for many AAA games, and has a bit of RGB so that your son can "taste the rainbow"

Unlocked chip if your son wants to overclock later, and an M.2 boot drive with a 2TB main storage. Just swap out the Monitor if your son isn't playing fast paced games.

So after you realizing that you guys were using pcpartpicker I went on there and end up getting him the all the stuff from their "Magnificent Intel Gaming Guide."  Guess I am spoiling him a bit as ended up going over budget.  I appreciate all of the advise.  Thank you.
