[SOLVED] 2 Windows Installations

I just built my first PC and from a previous prebuilt I took a hard drive preloaded with Windows 10 Home (64 Bit). I bought a 240GB SSD and cloned the Windows over to this. However, my issue is due to me cloning it over, another Windows is on the HDD. 

Is there any way to safely remove this Windows from my HDD? And if there is, could it be detailed?

remove the windows folders (program files too if you don't need them), and keep your maps with data like users on the drive.

 

this is actually the first time i say someone should be deleting system32

was going to do this but was just making sure. didnt want to mess up everything lol

as long as you don't delete the users part and the other parts you still need, you're fine.

Clean the HDD. Don't just format it, nuke it. If you don't nuke it, the mobo may try to boot to the MBR with a nonexistent OS.

 

Manually select the SSD as the boot device when you power on the PC. 

In Windows open an admin CMD

Type "diskpart"

then type "list disk"

it will list the available disks, look for the HDD (based off capacity)

then type "sel disk 'x' " (where x is the number of the HDD listed by disk part)

then type "clean"

This will nuke the drive. You may have to go to Disk Management and partition the drive for use.

That doesn't clear the MBR though. I did this when I cloned over to an SSD, and I had to manually select the SSD because it kept trying to boot to the HDD with no OS, but had a boot table.

he's talking about wiping the drive in question completely, not reinstall the OS on it. lol

So in that case you download the windows 10 media creation tool that will make either a bootable USB or DVD. during the install process in the HD selection screen you chose more options and delete the partition. than chose that deleted partition to reinstall windows on.

Thats the long way, but you can do it that way

though it take a bit longer it also tends to remove the chances of buggy behavior as well

nothing but if he is already reinstalling windows it can be easier via install media. if it is for a data-storage drive dskprt is fine

he cloned the hdd, and is now seeking to erase the hdd.

yes but the drive he clone 2 now has 2x windows os. he only wants 1. Though I suppose he could use dskprt to remove everything and reclone. but than you have old drivers installed in the os and that causes buggy behavior most of the time

could be a mistake in spelling for what he ment and you may be right but it reads to me that he has 2 os on ssd

did you want anything from user profile at all?

you will have to take root permissions from all files/folder to delete everything in those folders
