PNY 760

HDZx

Hey guys,

recently I was recommended to buy the GTX 760. I've been looking into it, and I found one for $230 from PNY that meets my budget. I have no problem with the brand, honestly I don't care about the brand, but some questions about the card.

Here is the card I am looking at:

http://www3.pny.com/GTX-760-2048MB-PCIe-P3405C589.aspx

I'll admit that I have not been really paying attention to hardware like I used too for quite awhile. But I noticed the clock speeds on this card are standard/lower than it's competitors and that the max resolution is lower.

So i'm not completely sure, is there something about this card that is weaker?

My build:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.0GHz Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 RAM: 12GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 Storage: Samsung 120GB 840 SSD Cooling: Corsair H100 with Noctuas Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2

It looks reference, but I'm not so sure... Different brands have different clock speeds.

My only issue is that I have $200 store credit to Best Buy, sadly it's to Best Buy and the PNY is $230 there. I'd literally get the card for $30.

I'd rather not pay out of pocket, the EVGA SC ACX edition is $299 there. Anybody think I should just go with that?

Alright, that is what I was thinking in the first place until I saw the $230 PNY and second guessed myself. I'm kind of a cheap bastard.

Buy the EVGA 760 for $300, then upgrade to a 770 through their Step Up program for $30-$40.

Eh?

Who the hell says grab identical card at 300, rather than at 230?

I will have you all know that PNY is a top end manufacturer just like EVGA, please get some facts right, i detest ignorance.

How are we being ignorant when the PNY card is slower? I've yet to purchase a card, but go ahead and try to change my mind.

The PNY version may be $230, but it is slower and i've read that the fan can be rather noisy. It also only has a 1 year warranty, compared to the 3 year warranty on the EVGA card. The lifetime warranty I have heard is very limited, and only lasts for how long the card is manufactured for.

I'm actually considering going with an AMD card now. Why? Mantle, FreeSync and price.

@Recon-UK does have a point. $300 vs $230 is pretty friggin' steep price difference.

I remember someone asking about the other "less named" brands like PNY, and Linus's reply was....they are all basically identical. Different name on it, and a probably different cooler, BUT it is still the same GPU. Both are GTX 760's. Both should at least meet the required specs that NVidia "gave out."

The EVGA card is faster because it's factory overclocked. You can overclock yourself with NVidia's software, or any other 3rd party overclocking program (i.e. MSi Afterburner or VGA PrecisionX).

The reference speed provided by NVidia IS 980MHz on the Core, Boost up to 1033MHz, and an effective memory speed of ~6000MHz.

Oh, I found his exact reply on this thread post: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/96825-why-is-pny-so-cheap/

"Nothing wrong with PNY cards. They're cheap because the demand is low."

"rarely recommend any particular graphics board maker. In terms of sheer card quality hey are all good and I've yet to find evidence (aside from the odd... mistake... like shipping a card that's just plain clocked too high out of the box) that any of them are "bad". The real difference is support, and since I'm a bit of a special case to most of them (review units vs retail units) I'm not in a great position to evaluate that."

I know what a factory overclock is, I know the others are factory overclocked. Just wanted to see what people had to say about the PNY card considering it's price. I'm not that stupid.

I'll admit that I wasn't very clear in my reply earlier to him. That's my fault. I had actually seen what Linus had said awhile back, saw this card for just $230 and wanted to see what everybody else here had to say.

So does anybody think it is a bad idea to go with reference (PNY)? Is it really that worth it to go with something non reference such as the factory overclocked EVGA that costs $70 more and has a better cooler?

I'm going to be picking the card up today.

I don't see anything wrong with PNY, personally I buy EVGA. I have always bought EVGA NVidia cards and always will, but PNY is still good and you will get practically the same performance as any other. You will only lose a few FPS, nothing drastic.

Maybe consider this one?

slower? You mean 2% slower. The fan being noisy isn't a pny problem, but an nvidia reference problem. What people don't realize is that reference cards are IDENTICAL to the ones designed by nvidia, no matter how bad the brand's reputation is.

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place

I obviously clarified, so nitpick and try to make my argument look bad if you want.

Obviously the card is reference and uses an identical design, but also has a 1 year warranty compared to a reference NVIDIA's 3 year warranty. I've heard that the PNY card seems to be pretty cheaply made. Whether or not that is true I don't know, that's why this thread is me asking for everybody's opinion on it.

Don't argue here, it's a waste of time. I'm asking for suggestions, not an argument.

Get the pny card. The nvidia one is better, but not $80 better. That said, I haven't looked into their step up program and if you could later get a 770 for $40 more, you might want to go for the evga
