Now I'm Actually Planning To Get An Intel Optane Since I Want To Speed Up My 10TB Barracuda. Now I Was Wondering If I Could RAID The 5 x 2TB Firecudas And Then Accelerate The Entire RAID Module Using The Optane Drive... Please Help ASAP

Hi

no you cannot I am afraid. Intel state "Intel® Optane™ Memory doesn’t support RAID acceleration". See this thread

https://communities.intel.com/message/576571#576571

Optane works by effectively creating an "invisible" RAID 0 between the Optane memory and a single HDD volume. The accelerated drive therefore cannot already be RAID.

At the time of writing Optane comes in 16GB and 32GB HDD accelerator flavours, and some quite expensive SSD flavours. The 16 & 32 GB variants are intended as a cheap way to accelerate HDDs to near-SSD speed.

Now, I have been using a 32GB Optane with a 2TB Seagate Barracuda for around 6 months now. Mostly its great, but it does have drawbacks.

  • 32GB is not a lot. The Optane software will decide what files it thinks you use the most. You do have the option of manually pinning files or programs to Optane, but as I said 32GB is not a lot. For example, if you have a favourite game, you may find yourself choosing between a fast boot into Windows, and a fast boot into your game.
  • I do not believe Optane to be fully reliable. I have had it fail me twice: once it simply stopped working following a Windows Update - that needed me to disable and re-enable Optane, a process which took around an hour. The other time a local substation fault caused a brief powercut, that was enough to corrupt Optane - Windows would not boot and the Recovery Disk was no help. I ended up having to completely reinstall Windows from scratch, it probably took me 6 hours in all, including all my programs and files.

Consequently, in my opinion, and especially with falling SSD prices I believe that getting an SSD would be your better option. Optane 16/32GB is really just a cheap HDD upgrade option.
