External drive for games?

Hello, i have a laptop with 1TB of HDD storage along with an SSD with 240gb of space and around 60 gb free, can i use an external HDD with usb 3 or type c thats atleast 500gb (1tb preferably) with no lag whatsoever?

it's not a bad idea, but I would get another harddrive or ssd because of the premium you pay for external hdd's that are keepable to have the speed needed for playing games on it

would you recommend me some external hdds and external hdd/ssd cases?

You can set your Steam library to default to installing games in a different location, just set that in the Steam settings to your external HDD and it'll always try to download them onto there.

I do something similar with my laptop. It has an SSD onboard, but I have a 1Tb HDD in the docking station. I never play games on the go, so I put my steam library in the dock HDD.

i would suggest to buy a bigger hdd and just swap the one in the laptop instead of using it as an external one.

 

then either resell the old one or get an enclosure to use the old one as an external hdd
