Hyper V exporting

Go to solution Solved by BloodKnight7,

nope, I dont think that the server will have any issue while macrium is doing its job, or any other software for that matter, just make sure no user can connect to the database and you should have no issues with torn databases ;)

ive several servers

some are set up in hyper v

so i wanted to know if i export a hyper v server while its running would it be a problem?

its an erp purpose server. so if i export to a file would it cause isssues to the virtual server?

I'm not a Hyper-V expert, but if the export option works when the VM is online it should work without issues.

im not a hyper v expert as well but im just concerned hahaha

I see. Wouldn't it be better to just stop the VM and export it then? Atleast it would give you a simple "backup" in case somethign goes wrong if you try it later on :P

That is entirely dependent on the services running on the virtual machines and whether they support that. For example, Exchange 2016 does not like any live failover/migration situations as it has its own systems built into it to achieve this. You'd have to ask the application developer.

exchange 2016 is used for emails.

Um... seems VSS is not supported for the database, for exchange 2016 it should be no problem.  Look at this link for sage database (hope its the same product)

i do remember seeing acronis somewhere. but i was going to use Macrium Reflect server plus to copy the entire server first than the virtual servers.

That should also work, just make sure to follow the same conditions described (no active users) and you should have no problems.

so only a midnight work will do the trick then.

that way no active users will be available only system services.

You got it  :). And all this because this database has no service that will allow it to be quiesced :S. There are many "workarounds" but involve scripting for this type of cases, and I dont think you are looking to get into such type of solution? normally it's a test and error process which involve some measuring as well.

as fat as macrium goes i think it will copy properly. im concerned though about the live server like will it get into an issue while its being imaged?

Good luck :)

so copying c partition was no issue but copying d partiton is more than 10 hours so i had to cancel.

weird thing was the vm systems turned off but takes a long time for system updates like 2 hours now its under system update.

Oh hey, sorry for the super late answer, how big is your D partition? Hyper-V export is really not that fast. If you would like to speed up the process you could try:  shutting down the VM then go into settings, detach all the VHD files, export, copy the exported harddriveless VM along with the unexported VHD(s) to their destination, import, then reattach VHD(s).

If you detach the VHD(s) first, export time is less than 30 seconds. Almost all of the export time is copying the VHD, and it is just that, copying the VHD. It's not "converting" it or changing it in any way. So you might as well just detach the VHD(s), export, then copy the VHDs only once.
