Hey all! I'm looking at building a new PC since my current one is really chugging trying to ingest and export 4K60p video timelines. I mainly use Premiere Pro, but have been considering switching to DaVinci Resolve. Besides video editing, I also use Lightroom (photo catalog and development), Ableton Live (music production, single-core performance is key), and of course the occasional game of Fortnite or COD. I'm planning to continue using my LG ultrawide @ 3440x1440.

Here's what I'm thinking:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i9-9900K 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor  ($579.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock - Z390 Phantom Gaming 9 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($255.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($569.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung - 970 Evo 1.0TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive  ($277.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate - IronWolf 10TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($300.02 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate - IronWolf 10TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($300.02 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate - IronWolf 10TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($300.02 @ Newegg)

GPU: carrying over a 5GB GTX 970 from current build
Case: Fractal Design - Define R6 White TG ATX Mid Tower Case  ($163.35 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Thermaltake - Toughpower Grand RGB 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit  ($98.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $2926.34
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

My main questions are around the case (I want USB-C 3.1 on the front panel, and room for 3+ HDDs) and also to learn a little bit more about my cooling options. I want to run the CPU overclocked if I can, because every ounce of CPU performance matters for video work, and basically I'm willing to spend whatever it takes so that my CPU is operating at peak speeds (while also lasting at least 6 years).

(US based, $3.5k budget)

The NH-D15S or Dark Rock Pro 4 are much better pairings for Trident Z RGB memory modules. Probably the NH-D15S would be better as it won't block the memory module lighting.

I don't see a pcpartpicker listing yet but Fractal Design does list a Define R6 USB-C White. It appears to be available from Newegg.

If you are going to push cpu overclocking you should probably consider an aio. The Kraken X62 rev 2 would be a good choice.

Not a fan of the psu. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=499 Consider instead Corsair - RMx (2018) 650W 80+ Gold.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Looks solid, a few things though.

First, get an AIO or make a custom loop, I would personal get a kit from EKWB, it's in your budget. I will say a loop will make it look cool.

Second, get your self a better power supply like a Seasonic or EVGA.

Also I would personally get a m.2 card with 4 500gb m.2 drives. But thats your call.

Yes, that's the FD case I was truly looking at and, like you said, it wasn't in PCPartPicker so I just added the non-USB-C version.

If your going to overclock the i9-9900K than get a AIO,

if not than stick with the NH-D15

Okay, so I'm hearing that liquid cooling is gonna be a better for me. As far as which cooling solution: custom loops definitely look great, but have a price tag to match. I'm obviously into looking cool, but visually an RGB AIO is good enough for me. Will a custom loop offer tangibly greater performance than a high-end AIO?

Re: M.2 drive: I don't think I need more than 1TB on my OS drive; is the extra PCIe slot & expense going to result in significantly better performance than just using the M.2 slot on the motherboard?

With a custom loop you just get more options, a 240mm aio is going to perform the same as a loop with a 240 radiator; if they were both cooling CPU. However, with a custom loop you can add more radiators for better cooling. You can cool more components like your GPU and RAM. It seems like money isn't an issue for you since your buying three 10tb drives, so personally I would build a loop. Plus you case is perfect for loops.

The M.2 card is more of a luxury than a tool, it just makes things more convenient because you don't have to worry about sata ports disabling when your installing the drives on your motherboard.

More than happy to spend money in order to make money! (in this case, I measure money by time saved during video editing/export) Over the lifetime of the machine, it all really adds up.
