970 Evo m.2 question

Looking at the pictures, it seems the memory chips are only on the top side and the back/bottom side has nothing on it. Can you confirm for me?

Yea, thats what I was seeing as well. I have a heatsink ill be throwing on it since I have one already on my Intel 600p it will be replacing. Since everything is on the top side, this is a good thing to ensure everything is covered with the heatsink.

Does it really need a heatsink?  If you have a case with good enough airflow it should be OK I think... Operating temps are fairly good IIRC. BTW nice choice, I am pretty impressed with the generational leaps in performance samsung has put out lately, and endurance.

I already have it. I have a full water cooling loop in my case so it has OK air flow, not great and the m.2 slot on my board is under the GPU, so I error on the side of caution to be safe.

If it even gets close to 70C, I would say that's more of an airflow problem and would reconfigure case fans, or apply more cooling fans, rather than a heatsink, which I have heard can be detrimental rather than helpful... I don't know first hand though as I don't generally like heatsinks, it's bad enough that some board manufacturers put on ugly heatsinks without adding to it

Ahh I see, yeah with a custom water loop, the airflow is generally a bit poorer, I opted for an AIO instead on mine and the airflow is awesome.
