PCI-E Lanes requirement.

I've got this motherboard.

 

I am attempting to get my Hyper M.2 X4 Mini card working.

I've spoken with asus whom tell me my i7 4790K does not have enough PCI-E Lanes to work with it.

My 1080 is using 16 Lanes.

Does this really mean I'll have to turn my GPU into a 8x to have the Mini card working?.

no, it means it will use 8 lanes on the 16x slot. and 4x for the networkcard

However, I can't really seem to make the card work at all.

And that explains why I have such poor performance?

I believe you will need a bios that supports NVME in order to use it.

The bios does have nvme support.

I am assuming that m.2 4x card is using a 16x slot. Some of the m.2 slots might be dissabled as the CPU cant support all the slots and the slots are wired in a way that dissables some of them 

 

Edit: it really shouldnt be an issue. Try using the iGPU in the CPU and slot the m.2 4x card into the PCIe slot that has access to the full 16 lanes. Just remove the GPU for now
