If you are on wifi, try repositioning your antenna or just switch to lan

I can’t switch to lan and the router can’t be repositioned  unless I pay £99

the router is currently downstairs and at the opposite side of the house so it probably goes through a 3 walls to get to me

You can't do lan because? why can't you relocate the router, can you take a photo of your network setup?

Getting new wifi gear like new AP or receiver on your computer is expensive and performance gain is marginal.

Powerline or get a dedicated WiFi Access Point and run an ethernet cable to a room closer to your PC so it only has to go through the ceiling.

Either way, £50 is not going to be optimal although possibly might get your original speed over powerline, depends on your wiring.

You can't say performance gain is marginal without knowing the existing setup.  If the antennas are at the back of the PC then getting an antenna you can reposition can give HUGE gains.  If its only 802.11n 1x1 and router is 802.11ac then getting a new WiFi adapter with 802.11ac 3x3 could again potentially give huge gains, even an 802.11n 3x3 could if the router is 3x3.

You are right though, we need to know more information to make any guess.

ok so i have a virgin superhub 3 downstairs. The router could go right next to the PC but virgin have said that to get the coaxial cable activated it will cost £99 or i can do it myself and void warranty. i currently have a this - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/tp-link-archer-t9e-ac1900-wireless-dual-band-pci-express-adapter-with-low-profile-bracket?gclid=CjwKCAjw0JfdBRACEiwAiDTALg6ZuHaXu0ZFhTe296UO2aXZtIiTOyzotJW2UKelSVCIjzTCi4ZC-RoCOxcQAvD_BwE - in my pc and have an 802.11ac. I am happy to get a powerline adapter but do not know how clogged up the wires are from the router since it is across the house. all help is appreciated

Running a longer COAX cable shouldn't be that hard, voiding the warranty is BS as if you have problems you can always unplug the longer cable and move it back downstairs.

That said, you could just as easily run a long ethernet cable and avoid that issue entirely.  Its probably also cheaper.

the ethernet cable would have to be 30 odd feet so i dont really want to. what kinda speeds could i hope to recieve on a powerline

Nobody can say for sure as it depends on your internal wiring.  I avoided it as my house is relatively small and powerline is known to potentially cause issues with DSL.

Ok I think I’ll have to go with powerline since the other options just won’t work
