i have a nvidia gtx 780 3gb graphics card and a amd fx6300 black edition cpu. which one would need upgrading first?

cpu imo.

the 780 is like a 1060 3gb. 

For cpu, depends on your budget. a i3-8100+ cheap z370 for some upgradeability.

the FX series is honestly not very good imo.

well it was a budget build like 3 years ago and i still use it. i dont earn much so didnt want something too costly so wondering what should i upgrade to? needs to be a am3+ socket to fit my motherboard

If you want to stick with AM3+, your best bet would be to upgrade to an FX-8320/8350/8370. There is also the FX-9370 and the FX-9590, but those are ridiculously inefficient, and are basically just highly overclocked FX-83XX CPUs.

With no heatsinks on the VRM around the CPU socket I'd stick with low power FX chips like the 8320E or 8350E. A 9590 or similar would probably overwhelm that board and throttle constantly.
