Hi, first post on a forum... ever.

I'm quite good when it come to the machine as it is, but the networking world a PC is connected to, that's where I begin to have some trouble.

I know a bit of the language, but not all of it (so keep that in mind please).

So the problem is: I want to work on the same files/folders on my 2 PCs at the same time or independently. I have 2 Windows machine, one on 10 and the other on 8.1. Windows 10 machine is on Wifi and 8.1 machine is plugged in my routeur.

I've did some research and the easy option "Homegroup" doesn't exist anymore on Windows 10. I've tried many threads before finally giving up. I've tried the files sharing option on File Explorer, but with no success. I'm starting to think all of my network might be F upped. Here's where I also need some explanations:

From my 8.1 machine (plugged in my routeur), I can sometimes see the other wireless windows 10 machine, which I was recently able to access by entering the password and all. But sometimes, even when it's on and connected to the wifi, it doesn't show up...

Second problem/question: My routeur seems to be displaying as a computer all by itself under the Network tab. I sometimes see 3 computers; my wifi pc (10), the pc from which I'm using (8.1) and my routeur which is called (XXXXXXXlan). When accessing the routeur interface from the web, in the LAN config tab, I can change the name, iPv4 or 6 choice and the IP. I've tried changing the name and after restarting it correctly shows that my routeur has changed name under the Network tab in file explorer. IP is set to the default 192.168.1.1. I can access my routeur/computer in the network tab but it's empty. Should I be seeing folders or something? Is that normal that my routeur is represented as a computer/as a LAN?

From my wireless pc, I can immediately see my plugged in PC (8.1), but can't access it. I'm prompted with an error message saying that I don't have the authorization form the server host. I've checked on that pc (8.1), network discovery, file sharing and all are ON.

So what do I do, cause I don't want to buy a NAS or build a second computer just for server purposes, I just want to share some folders, or maybe a whole hdd or something like that.

Thank you all for your help and time

Might be a firewall issue.

Win10 and Win defender gets overzealous and blocks this stuff....sometimes. Real PITA.

Ensure at least you are listed on the same Workgroup name (right click This PC/My Computer/Computer/whatever it's called) click on last option "properties" and look for the setting on the 1st tab "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings"

Ensure the "workgroup" name is identical across all systems.

That's the 1st part.

The next part is much more involved.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Thanks for the answer! Workgroup as been changed to the exact same. Windows Defender is disable, and maybe I'm missing something but I've checked Firewall.

Still having trouble seeing my wireless pc on the network

Thank you
