Hi all,

I have a I7-4770, r9 380x and 16GB of RAM.

Lately i'm having trouble playing games at high/ultra settings at 60 fps.

Do i need to upgrade my cpu and graphics card or only my graphics card?

What should i get? can i buy a 2080 without bottlenecking my cpu?

Thanks

2080 is probably overkill. a used 1080 should be the sweet spot.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Just find a used 980ti on the cheap or a soon to be relatively cheap 1080ti

Although if you're only gaming at 1080p 60hz upgrade your monitor before buying a new GPU

best not to type in absolutes without knowing what software is being used or without knowing any information.

thats why you ask them to check for a current bottleneck instead of blindly stating facts without knowing what they are doing.

except for anything higher than a 1070. that is where the bottleneck would START and the GPU would go from 100% usage down to 85-90%.

The 970 is a good card but a 1060 6GB is the same and uses a lot less power

good for you

you have no clue what the op is doing or running on their machine , you also have no clue where their bottleneck is as they haven't checked for it

that's why you don't type in absolutes with zero information , which is what you have.

That CPU is going to be about equal to an R5 1500X and will be perfectly fine

It's unlikely the 1070 is being bottlenecked much unless they're playing on 1080p lower settings in games

Not really no, I have a 4770k and a GTX 1070 and have no issues at 1440p 144hz without a CPU bottleneck, friend has a 3770k and a 1070 Ti and has no issues (Not even in battlefield 5, which hits the CPU hard), he runs at 1080p 144hz, it really depends on the game too.

hmm have you watched your GPU usage %% does it stay at or above 99%?

I'm not saying it won't work. But I experienced a noticeable drop in GPU usage on going from a 1060 6GB to a 1070. It didn't affect the game itself just didn't allow the GPU to fully go to 99-100%

Only CPU usage really, and this is with more chrome tabs than I can count on 4 hands open, while gaming, and running an android emulator, I never hit 100% or really come that close, other than short bursts which happen.

I would love to upgrade to a 9900k system when it comes out but at this point for my gaming and usage it would be a waste of money for no net performance increase.

Haswell doesn't quite have the same single threaded as ryzen, because let's be real, could AMD really get away with selling CPUs that were only as good as 4th gen Intel?

That's not necessarily how bottlenecking works. If it were, and bottlenecking were to be avoided at all costs, there would be an extremely small amount of viable systems to actually build. For example, which GPU should combine with an 8700k to get both operating at 100% in all cases? There has to be only one because lots of GPUs have lots of different horsepower. Is it insane to pair an 8700k with a 1060 6gb? how about with a titan V? according to you, one of these combinations is inappropriate.

Again, not a bottleneck. If CPU usage is at 100% but the task is being achieved, there's no deficiency in performance.

Other components could be a bottleneck for not high GPU usage, for example, low system ram, or a slow spinning disk, either of those can cause stuttering if the textures are not in GPU memory and need to be loaded from disk, thermal throttling could also cause a "bottleneck".  I was talking only CPU usage in my senario.

I dont have Shadow so I cant test it.
