I had an old athlon 860k system laying around that i want to repurpose as a home server. The only problem is that the gpu that was in it is in my current desktop so it doesn't have any graphics output. I used the graphics card to setup ubuntu server and removed the card and tried to boot. The system seemed to stat but I was never able to ssh in. After some googling I decided that it is probably not POSTing. Does anyone know a way to get around this and boot without a gpu installed?

You need a GPU for it to post because the  Athlon X4 860K does not have an integrated graphics chip. There is no way to post without graphics.

there is a dummy PCIe gpu card. (looks like a RAM chip for PCIe without a heatsink) They use to use them to make sure on-board video would work. you can try one of these or just buy a ebay $10 card like a PCI card. if neither are a option than sometimes you can find a bios update from 3rd parties that allows this (not recommended)

At that point it's more beneficial to just pick up a used GPU for 10 bucks and just slam it in. There's no point investing in some questionable cards or taking a risk with an unofficial third party BIOS.
