Hey guys

 

I've just installed my corsair H100i and overclocked my i5 4690k for the first time. I have the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard. I set my Ratio to 45 in fixed mode and changed the voltage to 1.2V also turning Intel turbo boost stuff off. My PC booted and I ran prime 95 for about 20 min and played a few games for about 30 minutes each and my results were as follows:

 

(Using CPUID HWMonitor)

 

Prime 95 - Max CPU Temp reached 80 degrees Celsius.

Far Cry 5 [1080p Max settings at 77Hz] - Max CPU Temp reached 54 degrees Celsius.

The Forest [1080p Max settings at 77Hz] - Max CPU Temp reached 48 degrees Celsius.

World of Warcraft [1080p High-Max settings at 77Hz] - Max CPU Temp reached 46 degrees Celsius.

 

My idle temps sit between 33-38 degrees but I think it's because of the fixed ratio.

My PC has also had no stuttering issues or crashing issues yet.

 

Now my question is, are my temps good and should I just leave my OC as is, or should I try reducing the voltage to try and drop my temps a little?

It's fine, though I would push further.

what limits the CPU isnt clock speed, but voltage (in this case 1.4V Vcore or CPU core voltage, and 1.9V Vccin or CPU input voltage) and temperature (no more than 75C full load). Voltage does affect stability and gets worse when clock speed goes up but voltage stays the same, that's why frequency can only go so far. For example, if your CPU hits 5GHz with 1.2V, then it's good (very good in fact). If it only gets 4.5GHz with 1.55V, then it's a No. Hell no (for ambient cooling).

 

I'd suggest putting Vcore to 1.3V and Vccin to 1.8V first (always Vccin = Vcore + 0.5V), then see how much frequency it can go and how hot it will be in that state without giving up stability. Do note that sometimes Vcore specified in BIOS is far from what the CPU is actually getting, that's why you need software like HWinfo (sensor mode) to keep that checked.

Thanks for the help man! Will try boosting the Ratio leaving the Voltages the same until I run into any problems and then fiddle with the voltages until I find the sweet spot, my last question is do you think I got lucky with the silicon lottery being able to run 4.5GHz at 1.2V Vcore and based on that do you think I will be able to push 5GHz keeping it relatively cool?

5GhZ might be pushing it but 4.7 or 4.8 is reasonable with a good cooler (the H100i is more than good enough)

not sure if it's good, but at least it isnt bad.
