So starting out i built my last system in March of '12 and its time for an upgrade things have changed so I am looking for a little advice. I have about $1000 - $1200 to budget for the build but could go up a little bit if the extra investment is really worth it. Really going for the strongest bones I can get now and upgrade the rest over time. For now I am planning to use the existing video card as it’s the strongest part of my current build upgrading that later for a 1080 SLI setup.

Current System

  CPU

  • Amd Phenom II X6 T1100

  Motherboard

  • Gigabyte 770TA-UD3

  RAM

  • G.Skill 1800 Mhz 2x8GB

  GPU

  • PNY GTX 1060 6GB

New System

  Case

  • Thermaltake P5 Alpine Editon (Already Have)

  CPU

  • Amd Ryzen 2700x ($320)

  Motherboard

  • Gigabyte X470 AORUS GAMING 7 WIFI ($209)

  RAM

  • G.Skill Trident 2x8gb 3600mhz Z RGB F4-3600C18D-16GTZRX ($182)

  GPU

  • PNY GTX 1060 6GB (Reuse)

  PSU

  • Evga SuperNOVA G3 850 Gold 220-G3-0850 ($109)

Current Total $802

Storage

Looking at a M.2 drive for boot doesn’t need to be that big. I already have 4 x 120 GB Sata3 6gb\s SSD ill likely raid for game storage. Also have 2x 500gb 7200rpm Sata 3.5 HDD’s I could also raid.

Cooling

For now I would like to get a AIO Cooler maybe the EKWB EK Fluid Gaming A240 ($159)

Windows

Already have a copy of Windows 10 Pro

What else am I forgetting? Any Changes I should really consider? Looking for Advice/Tips as its been 6 years since I built a computer. Really looking to get into VR gaming with this PC. Thinking about waiting until Black Friday to see if i can get better deals then current pricing.

Looks good. Is there a reason you're going 850W? Your system doesn't need more than 650W. For M.2 drive, go for the Samsung 970 EVO 250GB.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800XT | RAM: GSkill Trident Z DDR4 3600Mhz | PSU: ADATA Core Reactor 850W 80+ Gold | CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C MONITOR: LG 32UL500-W 4K 60Hz, Gigabyte M27Q 1440p 165Hz

Eventually wanting to go 2x 1080's in SLI figured that 850w was probably the way to plan for the future on that one.

Woah, a Phenom II X6! I can definitely see why you want to upgrade, haha.

To make things easy, here's a PCPartPicker list that I put together (WARNING: CONTAINS A 1 TB M.2 DRIVE, WHICH YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CRITICIZE ME FOR INCLUDING. Also, something something it's right at the $1200 mark, oops.) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Nrpy8Y

I didn't include:

Case: ...you already have a case, and a pretty nice one at that. Should be no problem keeping that.

Graphics Card: Since you insisted on keeping your GTX 1060, I'm not going to challenge you on that.

Now, about the other parts...

CPU: I kept this the same. It's a really good CPU. Not much more to say on it.

CPU Cooler: Bumped this up to 360mm. However, I am not quite sure if it will fit. Never owned that case, sorry. If it doesn't support it, that's my fault entirely.

Motherboard: Made this the best AM4 motherboard that money can buy... also, it's just a really good motherboard. I can confirm, since I'm on the X370 version, the Crosshair VI.

Memory: This is just about the best memory kit that you can get for Ryzen. Low latency, high speed. Yeah!

Storage: 1 TB M.2 drive, oops. It's only $170, though.

Power Supply: Same basic idea of yours, but a bit cheaper.

And that is all! Take a look through that list, and have a great day.

Build something like this.....

I know that the psu that I HV suggested is a bit overkill, but the 650w, 750w ND 850w are going fr around same price... so higher capacity one will be better.

Motherboard

I picked the Gigabyte over the Asus for two reasons. 1st  It has dual M.2 Heat sinks the Asus only has one 2nd The on-board audio DAC seem's to be a bit better.

Case

Actually supports up to a 480mm Radiator. The gigabyte board is lighted orange so i was thinking about getting a full copper radiator that might be cool.

Storage

Damn 1tb M.2 given pricing lately that's not a bad price on one that large.

Let me break down your choices.

Motherboard: That's fine, I just recommend that one to most people, since almost always it has what they need. That's a great choice too, though.

Case: Okay, good to know. That WOULD be some great aesthetics, so go ahead.

Storage: Yeah, and it's even better now. Western Digital is selling a 1 TB M.2 drive for $160. https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0B/dp/B073SB2MXT/
