8700k high temps problem

Hello dear all,

So i have my new 8700k combined with an asus z370 prime-A motherboard and an h100i gtx cooler (not v2) .

From UEFI i set the volts to 1.15 disabled xmp and asus multicore enchancement and left everything else on auto and i still cant keep the temperatures down.

below are the temps while idleing (room temp 25c) which jump to high 70s - low 80s while gaming.

i tried to overclock to 4.7 all cores on 1.25 volts but that was just a dream with temps rising to 100 after 20 secs on aida 64.

Anyone had the same problem and solve it ?

I am convinced that i should delid and change the cooler to the H150 pro.

Any other thoughts ?

Ps.My case is a fractal define R6 with the 2 stock fans in front as intake and 1 stock on the back as exhaust.

The rad is on the top exhausting.

thanks we don't need a picture of the machine to diagnose it.

More than likely the thermal paste was done incorrectly , or you have the fans on the rad set so low that they don't actually provide any of the water cooling benefits a water cooler can give.

Got similar setup, and I hit 86c in AIDA 64 at 5.0GHz on all cores.  I agree, reapply thermal paste, reseat the pump, check fan speeds, etc.

Simple steps 1st.

Set fans to max speed. (ensure they are infact spinning)

make sure pump is pluged in and running.

if above is all good then.

 

 

Remove the cooler, clean old TIM, reaply new TIM. make sure the cooler is seated and secured properly.

 

If after that it is STILL running hot, 1 of 2 things is happening.

You have a defective cooler. Since you went with a AIO, you added in points of failure whilst gaining almost 0 additonal cooling power over a top end air cooler.

Or ,

Your CPU has a very bad application of TIM between the Die and IHS, meaning no matter what cooler you get ,your temps will be high.

2 options to fix this,

If u still have warrenty, get it replaced (if they agree to),

or

Delid it and apply Liquid Metal TIM for far better performance.

Does the thermal paste age matters ?

I used a sealed 3 year old arctic mx-4

What did you do with the pre-applied thermal paste on the AIO?  I just used what came on mine and it's working very well. Thermal paste is cheap, get new just to be safe.

 

If you do infact have a shit chip, not much you can do outside of delidding.

i had that AIO also on my old cpu so the paste had to be removed

Then my gut says the new paste is either old or misapplied.  

 

I'd put all your settings back to default and see what temps you get after re-applying.  Enable xmp, all that stuff back to normal.  See what stock base temps you have then go from there.

 

It's hard to believe that just setting all cores to turbo like that will throttle 100c.  Really rare for the chip to be THAT bad.

Thank you all for the advise guys i realy apretiate it.

what i did was.

1.I reaplied the thermal paste

2.Moved the rad to the front and reinstalled the stock fans instead of the corsair sp quiet edition that i was running.

Now everything seems to work fine.

The system idles at 25c and while stressing on Aida you can see for yourselves. i think it is fine right ?

Any objections are welcome.

I realy apretiate your interest again.

Right, good start and yes, good temps again.  Now OC it and see what you get.  5Ghz should be very easy and stable all day long.  I used Gigabyte's guide, for example.
