G-sync + FPS limiter or G-sync + Fast sync?

I just bought an ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, which is a 1440p G-sync monitor that runs at 144Hz (overclockable to 165Hz).

 

I plan to set the monitor at 144Hz without overclocking.  My GPU is a 1080 Ti, which gives me less than 144 FPS in some games and more than 144 FPS in other games.

 

My understanding is that G-sync will prevent tearing and stutter with FPS less than the monitor refresh rate but that G-sync doesn't help me when the FPS exceeds refresh rate.

 

From what I read, I can either use an FPS limiter like Rivatuner to keep FPS max at say, 140 FPS, so that G-sync will always apply OR I can use G-sync in tandem with Fast sync, whereby Fast sync will eliminate tearing (but not stutter?) when FPS exceeds refresh rate.

 

Is all of that correct?  And if so, which solution is better, G-sync + FPS limiter or G-sync + Fast sync?

From what I understand, G-sync + Fast sync causes addition input lag/latency which is a big problem, especially at that fps. I use AMD FRTC (frame rate target control) which is just a hard fps cap at whatever I set it at (144hz ofc.) If Rivatuner can do that exact same thing, just an fps cap and not any sort of vsync, that + G-sync is my suggestion.

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

Thanks, @Vegetable.  Rivatuner can do a global FPS cap.  Supposedly it introduces less than 1 frame of delay.  At 144 FPS, that is less than 7 ms and should be unnoticeable to me, especially since I don't play high speed shooter games.
