router/modem not working properly

I recently moved to a new house and we had to set up our internet. we have a zyxel modem/router combination. This device seems to be the problem. We have no problems connecting to it, but sometimes I don't get an internet connection. Smartphones always seem to work fine, but laptops and desktops on both wifi and ethernet cables regularly lose their internet connection while still connected to the router. 

are there any ways to fix a faulty router/modem like this or should we ask for a replacement?

We zitten volgens mij op een KPN netwerk met een abonnement bij online.nl ofzo, de router lijkt het probleem te zijn
