i have a fun idea for a video.

it's a challenge. the participants must try to use a slightly older system (2010 - 2013) for all the casual stuff they normally do on their computers and if they need to use a system newer than that they lose points.

for about 7 days the participants must use a system from that era for casual use. i understand that editing ltt video's on an old system isn't possible.

but i mean for writing documents and everything else.

it would be fun to find out if upgrading your system every few years still makes sense to do...

so the rules:

  • any hardware is allowed as long as it was released in the years 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. so the participants could use anything from a core i5 to dual xeon's
  • the participants must use that system for all the casual use that they would normally do. so that means web browsing, writing documents, etc.
  • this includes laptop use. so an older laptop is also required

it would be really fun to see if newer systems make sense for a casual user.

That sounds cool, but unlikely that LTT would try it, they wouldn't want to decrease productivity for all their videos to make just one video.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

i don't mean the whole team. as i said in the OP i don't expect them to edit video's on old systems.

what casual tasks are you talking about? because a lot of things could be replaced/made-done with working off your Android or iPhone ._.

this looks very easy, any i5 without GPU with 2-4gb ram will do

really? have you seen how many chrome tabs someone like Linus has open sometimes?

for your reference, an office pc  i3-2130 with 4gb ram only

30+chromes, excel, outlook,on win7 no problem

you will realise when ram usage is high, chrome will blank out the tabs to save mem

LTT did a video discussing whether 8gb of ram was enough, and they reported that at 13 tabs chrome crashed with 4gb of ram...

-snip-

Crappy work PC below, with 15 chrome tabs, 4 FF tabs, outlook, skype for business & MS teams & Excel open. Also a couple of work specific things and only has a crappy HDD. Works perfectly fine, if a little slow once I start popping open outlook & FF & Chrome etc. when I first login in the morning. I am however glad that it is being upgraded in the next couple of months... allegedly.

Well, the things that they would be doing on the older systems might take a bit longer, and then it takes longer to get to editing the videos and stuff on the new computers, thus slowing lots of stuff down.

the whole point is seeing if older machines can still hold up for that kind of thing.

chrome and google docs (web/app) aren't particularly groundbreaking ._.

if it's games then that's the Minimum Requirements argument all over again

if it's blender-like or video editing (caveat: SSD) then small files and projects might probably cope (exporting in general would be a pain though).

(my point being a word processor isn't taxing at all to make the secondhand-is-still-usable argument)

i have a laptop from 2010 that really slows down to a crawl when you try to multitask a lot on it... that has 4gb of ram and a dual core pentium without hyper-threading.. it's super slow. i guess it kinda depends on what hardware you use.

Well, my system is from that era, and it's still plenty fast for casual use. Yes, even video editing.

yeah i can imagine. damn that's a nice machine.

i'm not sure it would handle 8K footage though... which is what LTT uses i believe.

8K is most likely a bit too much, but 4K is still ok.

That's either due to memory Pagefiling (especially visible when it's paging to a HDD) due to RAM not being enough for those multiple programs, or the CPU doing more stuff than it can handle

(with that setup playing a video in the background might probably squat out 1 thread)

if word (let's excuse Excel for now) lags then that's 3 possibilities there (inclusive of a dying HDD)

I keep bringing this up, but I used an i7 870 for 6 years. 3D and Premiere (albeit with upgrades to GPU and RAM and SSD on the way)

the i7 870 is SO much faster than the pentium in that old laptop...

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-T4300-vs-Intel-Core-i7-870/m2938vsm961

(i think that's the cpu in that laptop, i'm not totally sure. the laptop is broken at the moment so i can't check)
