Hi Y'all,

I know this is likely to be a simple answer. I have read plenty of docs online that have alluded to a variety of issues from RAM to power plans. Add to which I have some challenging thermal conditions in an Enthoo Evolv which may be contributing.

I suspect the issue is my RAM but I just want some feedback from the community before I go out and drop $$$ on a new stick.

System specs are as follows;

CPU - Ryzen 5 1600x

MB - ASRock - X370 Gaming-ITX/ac Mini ITX AM4

GPU - 1070 ASUS Strix

RAM - G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB - 1x 16GB DDR4-3200

CPU Cooler - Corsair H60 54.0 CFM

PSU - Corsair SF 450W 80+

Case - Enthoo Evolv Shift Mini ITX

All fans have been replaced by Noctua fans.

I am aware of Ryzen issues with RAM so I totally expect to be told to disable XMP and bump it back down to 2400Mhz (currently clocked at 3000Mhz) (I think that may be max supported, unsure, lots of documentation saying lots of different things).

I only really use this machine for youtube and some light work.

Issues I am having;

Often when returning from low power states (hibernate, sleep) or even just in general use, such as hitting play on a pre-buffered or long paused youtube clip, I can get massive video artifacts, into whole system stuttering and into an eventual bluescreen crash. Often the message I get is related to a crash with the video scheduler error.

I have clean installed Win 10 multiple times, updated bios, rolled back bios, installed the relevant chip drivers from AMD and played with the relevant power plans, min max processor states ect ect.

The issue still persist.

At this point, I suspect the RAM, as I did not buy 'compatible' RAM for the 1600x, just supported ram for the motherboard.

I am also a little dubious on the PSU. I previously had a 1050 ti installed and I still had the problem. Am I asking for too much with the 450w PSU under load? I am less concerned about this as my gut tells me I 'should' be ok. My errors are occurring under low load and virtual idle, hence my rationale.

This has been an issue for months. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mud.

Almost positive that it's the ram. Although the 450w is a bit stretching it with a 1070, a 1050 ti uses much less power and you were still having the issue on that. As you suggested yourself, try dropping the ram speeds and timings down due to first gen Ryzen instability.

Try th putting RAM at stock speeds and see if that resolved the issue. If so, there's the culprit.

Otherwise, I'd lean more to GPU issue. Have you tried using DDU to uninstall the drivers and reinstall then froma new driver download?

You could try the PSU, but you wouldn't have been pushing the limits with the 1050. With the CPU and GPU alone, your pulling about 408 watts from PCPartPicker.

@Mudachicken

did you try your system with stock ram speeds? 2133 or 2400mhz ?

i don't know how many times i have to repeat this, when you're having issues, always test your system completely stock to determine that there is actually a problem or just user error.

Quote or Tag people so they know that you've replied.

I have only down clocked from 3200 to 3000Mhz at this stage.

I will bring it down to 2400 then 2133Mhz and test stability. I was trying my best to avoid having to go all the way back to stock speeds (2133) but I will bite the bullet and do it.

Sounds like I might be buying some new ram from the list of compatible rams for 1600x. Probably some of the trident ram.

Big thanks for the quick replies, is much appreciated peeps.

When you say challenging thermal conditions what do you mean? Also if the lower ram speeds didn't work then ram may not be the problem. Provide temps pls

CPU:R9 3900x@4.5Ghz RAM:Vengeance Pro LPX @ 3200mhz MOBO:MSI Tomohawk B350 GPU:PNY GTX 1080 XLR8

DRIVES:500GB Samsung 970 Pro + Patriot Blast 480GB x2 + 12tb RAID10 NAS

MONITORS:Pixio PX329 32inch 1440p 165hz, LG 34UM68-p 1080p 75hz

The case has pathetic airflow. I have idle CPU temps of 45-50C, GPU around 47 on idle, I can ramp up fan speeds to drop 5 degrees or so but the noise is quite annoying. It's just a draw back of the case design, I say challenging as I have a much cooler pc running beside it, I doubt those temps are the reason I am having my issues.

That said this case will hate our upcoming summer when the ambient is another 10C in here :\
