My build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/TCKBD3

I have a HDD and an SSD in my first build I recently completed. The SSD is supposed to be much faster than the HDD obviously (and it is) but my HDD boot time is under 14 seconds and everything I open in the PC opens instantaneously. It makes it feel like the SSD is wasted money or am I just lucky? Can somebody please explain if an SSD was just over-hyped or not, thank you.

That's windows fast shut down at work. Try holding shift while pressing shut down, and then starting up. That should show the true speed differences between the two drives. Windows also gets slower the longer you have it(bad at managing DLLs, having to load more of your files, etc), so if your testing both on a fresh install the difference will not be nearly as noticeable. On my dad's 5 year old(basically abused) work computer, start up went from 3 minutes to 30 seconds. Boot isn't everything. Programs will also load much quicker. Another good test is to try searching for something in windows. On the HDD, results will take millions of years to come up, while on the SSD they will be nearly instantaneous.

I see now. I couldn't see the benefit but I tried searching something in Windows and the SSD was actually much faster. I will transfer everything on my HDD to my SSD then. Any idea how to transfer the Windows install?

Very similer story. My parents computer started with about 1 minute second boot up but as time went on there was more stuff on the drive and more start up programs so it took almost 5 minutes and windows really slowed down because of all the background tasks so we upgraded to a 500gb samsungssd and it boots in seconds

Yes, but I've got a couple questions first:

1. What brand is your SSD(trust me, it's relevant)?

2. Do you have multiple partitions on your hard drive?

3. If you have multiple partitions, how many do you have?

1. Samsung and Kingspec.
2. Only 1 on each.
3. N/A

Then use Samsung Data Migration software. If you had more than one I would recommend Aomei, but with one partition Samsung's is the best.

Thanks, will do. Does Kingspec not have such a function in their SSD's? Just wondering.

I don't believe they have their own software. Use Aomei backup manager for that one

Hello SupersonicSaint,

You can transfer you files in the HDD to your SSD with EaseUS also: https://www.easeus.com/backup-utility/migrate-windows-10-to-ssd.html
