Hello,

I built my PC back in 2014 with the following parts:

Mainboard: MSI Z87 G45

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670k

GPU: Nvidia GTX 770

PSU: Corsair CX 500M

RAM: HyperX Blu 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600MHZ

SSD: 256GB SATA

My graphics card died in January so I upgraded to a Nvidia GTX 1080.

With the new Intel CPUs I want to my upgrade my PC since the CPU is almost 5 years old and it's starting to get to its limits. Also it's bottlenecking the rather powerful GPU.

I want to upgrade to:

CPU: Intel Core i9 9900k

SSD: Samsung Evo 970 500GB

I have the following questions:

1. Should I upgrade my 16GB RAM to a DDR4 RAM with a higher speed? Is the difference noticeable?

2. Do I need to upgrade my PSU (500 Watt) when I am getting a new motherboard and CPU?

3. According to several news sites the i9 9900k has the 1151 socket. Should I already get a motherboard for the CPU now or might I run into compatability problems? I expect the motherboard prices for this socket to go up with the release of the new CPUs and I am looking to save a couple of bucks.

Thanks for any help!

If its an intel system, you probably wont benefit much from faster ram and 16gb is a healthy amount of ram.

Probably upgrade your psu to a 750 watt, since you have a gtx 1080 and a i9 9900k.

You should get a compatible MOBO now because from what ive heard the sockets are not interchangeable whatsoever.

Hope this helps.

1. No on intel it shouldn't be.

2. Most likely not if you're only using a 1080.

3. I don't think you should as motherboards aren't a asset and more newer and better ones with better vrm's etc may come out so you can overclock that i9-9900k beast.

  1. DDR3 memory will have to be replaced with DDR4 when the cpu and motherboard are upgraded. For Coffee Lake cpu there is a notable performance improvement with DDR4-2666 CL 14 and faster. 9th gen cpu are pure speculation at this point.
  2. Unlikely, but until Intel actually releases specs no way of knowing.
  3. Wait. There is huge risk in assuming rumors will prove entirely accurate and complete. Saving money and buying the bleeding edge are incompatible goals.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thanks everyone,

so what I am going to do is wait until the new CPUs are released and see if the PSU is compatible and which motherboard to get. After release I will probably update this thread and ask for help again :)

Again, thanks!

1. If you're gonna re-use your DDR3 kit. No. You need DDR4 for the processor you're going for.  FYI prices are quite high for DDR4 RAM right now.

2. Yes. Absolutely.

3. Wait. It might be 1151 but with how Intel does things it might not work with current or older 1151 motherboards. Kind of like the Socket 775 scenario from before when you had C2D, C2Q and older Celerons and Pentiums.

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770
GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti
