System specs:

Intel - Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor

Zotac - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB AMP! Extreme Video Card

ASRock - H170M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Recently I upgraded my RX 480 to a 1070. Soon, I would also like to upgrade my CPU to an I7 7700K. However, when i made a list in pc part picker to check for compatibility issues I received this message:

Some Intel H170 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.

Im not sure what this means and i would appreciate it if someone could explain the issue, thanks.

Basically, you need to flash the latest version of your motherboard's BIOS with your current i5-6500 still in the motherboard. After you have the latest BIOS, you can successfully remove that CPU and have the 7700k work.

It means that before you remove that 6500 for the 7700(K) you have to make sure your BIOS is up to date.

Also, why a 7700K instead of a 7700 since you cannot OC on that mobo?

Thanks for the answer. Didn't know I couldn't OC on this board, thanks for telling me.Although, its got a higher base clock plus I could use it on a new bored if I get one.

If you are thinking of replacing the motherboard too then just go for a 8600K or 8700 (or Ryzen+). No point in sticking to quad cores when hexacores/octacores are available.
