Hi,

I have a little bit of knowledge about servers and users and file sharing. But what I do not know is how my school, or any school for that matter, would set up their servers. So, this is what happens when I use a school pc. Assuming its on, I press ctrl alt and del, and it prompts me to enter a user name and password, after that I log into windows, and it is the same for every other student. As far as I know, a home server can store users that can be viewed on windows file manager and can have the files accessed from there, but I didn't think a user on the server could just sign into windows themselves. If you do not understand what I am on about, it's okay, I generally don't explain very well, but I try. Any help is appreciated.

in my school we have a server running windows server 2012, each student is registered to the server and divided in workgroup based on their age/course etc so any student has a document folder on the server and can access the data from every school's pc.

the teacher has the same stuff but they have different permission so that they can see our files etc.

hoped to be clear

That's a typical active directory domain.  The server contains centralized credentials and permissions for everyone.  When windows is installed it is joined into the domain, so when you log in the PC polls the server to validate your login against the PC you're on.  That's how you can use the same login everywhere.

You can do permissions via a group (student) or via individuals (sweaty IT dude), it depends what you're trying to do.
