Which Upgrade Path Should I Take?

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by :)

I have been willing to upgrade my current rig for the past year, and I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on my plan. Below is what I currently use:

  • i7-4790K OC with H115i cooler
  • MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
  • Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
  • 240GB SSD + 2x2TB 3.5" 7200RPM HDD in RAID 0
  • EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Hybrid
  • PSU EVGA 1000W 80+ Gold

Now here are my 3 options:

  1. LGA1151: i7-8700K with MSI Z370 GAMING PRO CARBON
  2. AM4: Ryzen 7 2700X with MSI X470 GAMING M7 AC
  3. TR4: Threadripper 1900X with MSI X399 GAMING PRO CARBON AC

All will have:

  • Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3600
  • Samsung 960 EVO 1TB M.2-2280

I use my PC for gaming and streaming on Twitch as well as making YT videos. I would love to hear what you guys recommend even if it's outside of my 3 options.
I do care about future upgradeability, but I'm also trying to keep my budget for this around $1k +/- $150

Thats quite the rig already if I say so. If I were in your shoes I would personally go the Intel route. The LGA1151: i7-8700K is a great cpu for the money from everything I've read. I traditionally am a Intel guy myself. Though if I am truly honest I'll say look up some bench marks for both. Then base your choice on your primary activity. AMD are both also battling for the top, but Intel has had a lot more experiencce, and history in the space thats why I tend to go with them even though they tend to be slightly pricier.

I hope this was helpful.

2700x is probably a waste.  I would get a 2600, same processor with 2 less cores for half the price.  You could put that money toward a second 980 and run them in SLI.  My recommendation, as I frequently state, for a motherboard would be the ASRock Pro4 b450, but feel free to look around and find one you like..

EDIT:  My mistake, you need an x370/470 board for SLI.  I would still get this one:

not a bad mobo for the price!

ASRock's deal is that they make good low-end boards.  No bells and whistles, no LEDs, but reliable.
