Hey Guys

So ive been thinking recently of getting a newer more beefy GPU as my Reference GTX 780 is finally starting to slow a bit in new games, mind you that is on high settings so id say its aged pretty damn well.
Anyway ive been looking at saving for either a Used RX 480 8GB (ref) or a GTX 1060 6GB which i can get for around $250-$320 AUD. Now i was gonna go straight for the Radeon as i prefer the cooler on it (i hate non blower coolers) however ive read here and there that AMD GPU's dont perform as well when paired with older CPU's yet similarly performing Nvidia GPU's dont get gimped as hard by the lesser CPU power, not sure if that sentence makes alot of sense.
My system is as follows:
W3680
Triple Channel 6x2gb DDR3
CX650M V2 (the good one not the old shit model)
And before someone says it, No i wont be upgrading my CPU, not for a while so deal with it :)
Also yeah if i can find one cheap then ill likely just get a GTX 980ti if i can find one because its a beast but their around $400 (AUD) for a reference model.

The 980Ti is a lot better, but don't get the reference model because it's hot & loud and doesn't boost as high. It's a power-hungry card so you need a good cooler for it. You definitely get no warranty with it so that's another drawback. But the power for games is quite incomparable as a highly-overclocked 980Ti matches the 1070Ti.

Out of those two, I suggest you get the 1060 6GB because it should perform better with your CPU than the RX 480. Reference cards are bad in general so the 1060 will perform better because of that too if it's an aftermarket model.

I do plan on getting the 980ti just kinda of tossing up whether or not its worth waiting and saving or getting the lesser GPU now. i think waiting and saving is a better idea since the 780 still treats me well.
i however will not get a custom one i only run Reference GPU's in my rig and ive never had issues with them besides the Reference 980ti i'm looking at is an SC so i really doubt the performance difference will be much, as for heat i always run custom fan profiles on my GPU's and doing that Ive kept my 780 ref in the mid 60's under load the entire time ive owned it and honestly the noise really isn't noticeable at all like when it gets loud im gaming and when im gaming im wearing a headset plus i got a thick af Dell sidepanel keeping that noise in so really the noise doesn't bother me and its a worthy trade off for the heat to be pushed out the back of my case instead of being just pushed around in side my case like a non blower cooler does.

Believe someone who had pretty much the best-of-the-best 980Ti there was :P Admittedly, it was very high clocked out-of-the-box but it also had a 2,5 slot-thick cooler with 3 fans on it and the top of my case was getting ridiculously hot under load. It was the Gigabyte XTREME Gaming 980Ti.

After this experience, I would never buy a 980Ti with a blower cooler. It's true that my case doesn't have the best airflow (Phanteks P400), but I have no issues like that with my current GTX 1080.
