What do I need to know about upgrading my CPU?

I'm going to be upgrading my cpu soon and wanted to know whats involved in the whole process. I know it's super easy to just take it out and put in a new one but is there anything I should know about software wise that I should look out for? Are there new drivers to install? Do I need to reinstall windows? What's that whole process like?

do you.... know why you are upgrading your cpu?

becuase a lot of these questions are very much beginner questions as far as computers go so..... how did you determine the cpu needs to be changed?

I agree with @emosun.

Generally physically easy to do. Certain things need to be taken into account. Power Supply, cooling and motherboard support for your desired upgrade. Given your questioning I would want to ask why you are planning on do it. Just in case it would end up being a waste of your money.

I recommend posting specs of you PC, it's intended use case and what you want to upgrade to.

I've been getting in to some more CPU heavy tasks lately (Video editing, streaming) and realizing that using a dual core is limiting me by quite a bit especially with video encoding so I've been looking to replace it with an i5.

Sounds like a solid use case. What are your current CPU specs and what i5 do you want to upgrade to?

I have a Pentium G4560 and I was originally going to replace it with one of the new I3's but it wont work with a b250 motherboard so I was thinking an i5 7400

Should be just fine upgrading.

If using the stock cooler, you may experience *slight* thermal throttling when under full load. A cheap $30 tower cooler will do just fine.

gl, hf!
