Downclocking Issue

Hi everyone,

I have a huge problem that nobody can solve nor explain. I have a Ryzen system, that recently got an upgrade for the PC (new motherboard and PSU, also custom loop). Now since then the CPU downclocks under load in Windows 10 after a few minutes without OC and after a few seconds with OC, Utilization just drops and clock speeds go down to 2,6ish Ghz. GIGABYTE, the motherboard manufacturer wasn't able to help me so far.

System Specs:

Motherboard: GA-AX370M-DS3H

PSU: BeQuiet! Straight Power 10 700W

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700X

RAM:32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000Mhz

SSDs: Samsung 950 Pro, SanDisk SATA 500GB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 6TB

GPU:EVGA GTX 1080Ti Hybrid SC2

It's because it has a very weak VRM, with weak VRM cooling, and you're running a 16thread CPU on it with an OC.

Ofc. gigabyte isn't going to tell you their VRM solution utterly sucks.

Even without any oc?

Im afraid I would have to change the board to something else.

Would b350 do any good? I couldn't find exact differences between b350 and x370

Or:

Could I manually put heat sinks in the VRMs?

Amazing rig, sadly you cheaped out in the motherboard.

As @Majestic said, your VRMs are the issue.

That's why people often recommend "balanced" configurations. If you can send your motherboard back and get one with stronger VRM it would be nice.

^^^^ If you want to overclock, I've seen the ASRock Tiachi X370 on sale for a good price, and apparently it has amazing VRMs.
