Upgrading my PC

I want to upgrade my current system as it's quite a few years old. I want to have a system that can game comfortably at 1080p with future proofing as well. I have a budget of around £500 but i'll only be upgrading in steps as and when I can afford the products. I need suggestions for cpu, motherboard and gpu.
