Have you install all the drivers that go with the Thinkpad R61? There's probably some sorta software driver that handles the track pad middle button, that's usually how it is.

 

Check the product website for driver downloads.

You need a touchpad driver as those are often still PS/2 Devices and not USB.

 

So you need something to tell the OS that it does what it does, wich the Driver does.

Its the same on my Dell Vostro 1500....
