Tricky video cards

I have a GTX Titan 6GB  that appeared dead, or almost there.   I tried a clean install of windows 10 downloaded updated drivers from Nvidia and still no go.   For the heck of it I tried the gtx 1060 driver disk , and it worked.   The Titan is stable and has been working with no problems for three months and I was able to updated the drivers.  

 

Is this a common issue with windows 10, or are there other mystical powers on the provided driver disk?
