In an attempt to make my room as quiet as possible I've removed a window AC unit, completely removed all fans from my computers by putting the radiators in a separate room, re-located the pumps, encased all LED controllers in teak (to reduce buzzing), and made a few other acoustic treatments. My room is basically silent aside from a bit of white noise from my speakers and some slight coil wine from my PCs, or at least most of the time...

Every few hours one of my 2 HDDs spins up and geez I never noticed how loud they are, seems louder than a case fan that's for sure. And that's without the clicking just the spinning, must of never noticed with all the other noise in the room. Anyways not really wanting to spend a ton of money right now I was hoping I could just get a USB HDD enclosure, plug them into my router, encase them in particle board, and stick them up in the top of my closet. Just wondering if they will get too hot and fry?

I don't use them all the time, mainly just to store video files, I even move the files off the drives when I actually need to use them, got a few M.2s in the other computers.

You'd want them to have some form of ventilation.  A tightly packed HDD in an enclosed space *could* reach 60c which is their maximum temperature.

Your best bet is to just toss them in a NAS and put it in another room.

Thought that might be the case, never entered the world of NAS...

Guess now's the time.

Thanks!

If the drives are passing vibration through to the case causing the noise you can bungee mount them so they are essentially isolated from the case. They also make HDD silencers which work somewhat decently.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the spinning is louder than the clicking, at least with my drives.

I would check their temps I believe hardware monitors temps are correct for hdd. Remember hardrives are noisy ( I attempted the same thing my cpu and gpu fan at the lowest they can go and my external hdd is louder).

Not sure how to check their temps when docked in an external USB cage encased in particle board.

I thought a NAS would be more expensive but you can pick one up that fits 2 drives for $150-200, plus I'll get the full speed of the drives as opposed to 60MB/s over USB 3.0, looking at these:

Not exactly sure what gains I would experience with double the RAM and the dual core in the second one, pretty inexperienced in this realm.

That's fairly normal you would be isolating any potential vibration from being amplified by the case itself if it was hard mounted.

In any case though physically moving the drives in a NAS and out the room and having nothing but SSD's for the OS and main programs in the system would be the best case scenario.

Yeah, not to mention that I use 3 PCs in my setup and if the one with the HDDs is down or off I have no access to the data.

Anyways I think I'm set on getting a NAS at this point.

That would help especially if you are trying to share data across all three computers and solve your noise issue. The drive should spin up once they're called for and data needs to be access but it will take a couple of seconds usually.
