I want to build a gaming pc for one of my friends and I need some help planning out the parts. His budget is 700 - 750 with no accessories (monitor,os,periphirals)

he wants to play overwatch at 1080p 144hz but overwatch isn't a gpu heavy game and im pretty sure its more cpu speed and ram heavy. Not sure where to go for that, but he only plays overwatch, and rocket league but he might get into gta v. Any help is apreciatted

Realistically speaking, you dont need much to play Overwatch at a good quality. However...connection quality is a big thing with it. A $500 will be enough for just overwatch.

Great, but that still dosen't solve my problem. I literally have no idea on what to recommend to him.

This is what I've come up with. Just under $700. From my experience, Overwatch and Rocket League do not need much CPU & GPU power at all to run at high settings, so a 1050 Ti will suffice.

As for CPU, the 8400 is a tried-and-true CPU from my friend whom plays Overwatch and CSGO and has no trouble with it.

If he is sticking to low cost, an AMD cpu, any 500w psu, a $200-300 gpu, any case and mobo of your choice and 8gb ram. That would be roughly $550-$675. You can choose the intel route but that is another rabbit hole..

For gaming, the 8400 performs better than Ryzen, 500W is overkill, and there are plenty of crappy PSUs out there.

He can cheap out on the ram a bit. Unless he plans on overclocking anything over 2600 is kinda unnecessary. Personally I would rather see the guy spend a bit more to get a zen 5 2600 and get keep stock cooler but that is just a personal choice.

For just gaming, yes. It would however make it $50 cheaper, which equates either a 1-2TB HDD or an upgrade to a 500GB SSD.

That's the second cheapest RAM kit. The $10 cheaper one is a 2133 kit. I know the locked Intel chipsets only allow for max 2666MHz.

The stock cooler on the 2600 is the Ryzen 3 Stealth 65W cooler. Not a good one, though better than Intel's paperweight.

The 2600 would cost less than the 8400.

-yeah that build by seon looks solid.

-pcpartpicker doesn't always have the best available prices in real-time so shop around to save a few bucks.

-the RX 580 is a nice choice.  your friend can buy a good 1080p 144hz monitor w/ Freesync

-SSD prices have been fallen pretty steadily this year.  look for good 480GB+ SSD deals

Maybe... I'd worry though about getting a used cheap GPU, because you don't know if it's been abused heavily in crypto-mining... unless the seller explicitly tells you it was used in that way.

Nvidia card prices will probably start falling even more in the next month or so... and AMD cards will follow suit.... Next gen Nvidia cards:

I'm still deciding on the gpu but my cousin has one of those strix 980's and is willing to give me one for 190. He dosent do mining or anything just light gaming,  but is upgrading, so I know its gonna work. Other than that, hows this build? Anything thats manually entered is stuff from micro center because pcpcartpicker dosent detect that.  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Vbq2bX

Build looks good.  yeah for playing Overwatch or games with similar requirements @1080p, the strix 980 will do fine.

Based on userbenchmarks, GTX 980 performance is similar to GTX 1060 6gb http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-980-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/2576vs3639

and new 1060's are still selling around $270+

I miss "cheap" ram.  i'd suggest 16GB but 8GB now and get another stick (similar speed, timings, voltage... same preferably) later if needed.  Adding another 8GB adds $70-100 :(

Getting the Asus - CROSSHAIR VI HERO ATX AM4 Motherboard AND the R5 1600 together for $240... nice! :)  Getting them separately would cost over $300 using pcpartpicker.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. A gtx 1060 would be nice but I want to sli 980's down the line and 1060's dont. I also found that combo deal on microcenter which seemed too good to be true, since almost all of that price is from the cpu and that motherboard is VERY nice.

I don't know the how many games have support for SLI, guessing not many, and I'm not so confident many upcoming/future games will provide support for SLI. it's something to consider if you seriously want to get another 980. Good luck! :)
