Need help with upgrading

Go to solution Solved by C1intFunWood,

To my knowledge, Insurgency Sand Storm runs on the Unreal Engine, and in my past experiences, games on that engine use much more RAM than any other game engine. Before I upgraded my RAM from 8GB, I would constantly run into stuttering or hitches caused by maxing out my RAM; you can try to keep task manager open in the background and check the graph for RAM usage periodically if it's being maxed out, that might be your problem

Hi guys,

So this is just a quickie I currently have a gtx 1060 3GB and 8GB of ddr4 2133Mhz ram and I was thinking of upgrading to make my rig more future proof, I was recently watching video showing that with the 3GB vram limitation on my 1060 sometimes the game/computer will have to use some of the ram to cache the file and I was wondering should I buy another stick of 8GB ram or should I swap my 1060 for a RX 580 8GB?

Thanks heaps.

~Tom

VRAM is different from DRAM. Video memory is not pagefiled and without adequate VRAM the game won't run. However, you will only run into VRAM limitations in most games by running at resolutions higher than 1080p which is the resolution I assume you're running at. Pagefile is used for DRAM - your regular system memory - and is only used when Windows or other operating system has determined that you will need more memory and will cache your opened applications in your boot drive or other drive if specified.

As for running out of VRAM, I have been using my GTX 780 with 3GB of VRAM for the past 4-5 years and I have not met a single limitation of VRAM in 1080P gaming. Although, in 3D rendering workloads with high resolution textures, I have maxed out my VRAM

CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600x | GPU GIGABYTE GTX 1070ti WINDFORCE | MOBO ASUS Prime X570-P | MEMORY XPG Spectrix 2x8GB 3200MHz  | PSU OCZ Zx 850W | CASE NZXT H440

Yeah thanks man, just the only reason I was asking this was because I recently got to play Insurgency sand storm closed alpha and even on a mix of low and medium my system would frequently freeze and stutter, this can also be said with R6S when ever there is an intensive gun fight my fps will drop from about ~120 to about ~50 :/ I'm not sure whats causing it.

I would say, upgrade your graphics. If you can afford it, a GTX 1070. a used 980ti is still going to be better than the RX 580.

graphics cards prices are still trending downwards. wait till black friday/cyber monday for some deals.

No can do, the gtx 1070 is a fortune here in Australia and we don't have black friday here also I only have a 500W psu so won't be able to run the gtx980ti

thanks any way tho

you're not kidding, i just looked at amazon au and the gtx 1070 pricing is ridiculous. a GTX 1080 in the US comes out to 677 AUD which is much cheaper than the GTX 1070TI at 735 AUD. You would think since you guys are much closer to Taiwan, you could get stuff cheaper, but my parents just came back from vacation to Australia and they said everything was expensive over there.

So, yes, try upgrading your ram and turn down you graphics settings. 500watts is bare minimum for a rx 580. you would probably run into power stability issues

Yeah I know it's fucking ridiculous here my gtx 1060 3GB cost me about $400 AUD :/ the only viable way for purchasing parts at a decent price is through the second hand market and that's pretty dodgy.
