you could remote into your desktop, from your laptop.

TeamViewer works but after a certain amount of time it thinks that your using it commercially and then wants you to pay

why use 3rd party when Microsoft has it built in?

Radmin is greatest in my opinion. I'm using it from years and it's free for first month. Of course you'll need external IP on your desktop and forward one port, but that's all.

So you'll need - configure your computer to turn on using magic packet if you want to turn it on remotely and download any application that sends magic packets (lot of they are on android and other mobile phones). Then install UltraVNC just as alternative - you'll can remotely control your computer using your smartphone (or your laptop) - just in case. Then install Radmin for normal work. You can configure Radmin that you'll feel like you're working on local computer - even without any additional menus or toolbars from Radmin itself if you want, with your own key shortcut for fullscreen etc. It's the way I'm working and I've tested lot of stuff, including TeamViewer and RemoteDesktop (both are not so good and fast enough).

If you want to have everything even better and under control, install FileZilla Server for faster file transfer (even if Radmin has it's own file transfer - it may be useful). You can also use Emby if you want to listen music streaming from your home computer etc. You have lot of possibilities.

There is also program called Winflector - you can use only selected programs remotely, without controlling whole system. For example - you opening Word remotely, write like it's installed on your computer and save files on remote computer. But last time I've checked, Winflector has some bugs (it's updated very often though, so it may be better now).
