Memory compatibility with mobo

I want to get an MSI B360 gaming arctic motherboard to go with my i7-8700k and was wondering if the Trident Z 3000mhz ram I wanted to buy was compatible because on the MSI website . . . the motherboard only 

• Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 2666 MHz. 
• Does this mean that the Ram will not work or will only run at 2666Mhz?

Anything not a Z370 board can’t have ram above 2666

It will boot but will be stuck at 2666.  Like said above, you need Z370 to go past 2666.

Either get a Z370 board or a i7 8700 instead, no point in 8700K and B360/H370

Why is there no point? And is the performance a major dip from the 8700 to the 8700k?

The 8700K is just a 8700 that allows you to overclock, otherwise no difference.

 

If you don't have a Z370 board you can't overclock, so there's no point in buying a 8700K without a Z370 board.
