My better half has a youtube channel and fb group with a few thousand members and would like to get a better camera for doing videos.  Of course, she doesnt realize that 4k videos require quite a bit more processing power and storage, so  I have to handle that for her.

Ive been needing / wanting to go ahead and build  server for the house.  I need enough juice to  handle 8 4k security cams and 2-3 virtual machines, as well as file storage duties (i know that doesnt take much.) I also host my own Email & DNS servers (offsite currently)  That I would like to move back in house.  At some point I also plan on doing home automation to, but I think I might get an entirely different server for that.

Ok so Question.  Is it possible to get a 4K camera to record directly to the Server HDD's?  The Camera will most likely be connected to  The pc, and then over 10gb or a 40gb fiberlink to the server?  Her videos are upwards of 3 hours long in one go, so i think it would be simpler and cheaper than big enough cards for the camera.

as far as the server goes.. I think the security cameras will need  to most resources.  Should I just go ahead and build something with a modern chip, or would and older 2cpu blade or something work?  I assume it will need A GPU as well.

anddddd dead thread... they never get answered once they are moved  mods.. never.

Not so. :)

The software used to capture a camera stream determines where the stream is stored. I think you will find that any decent video capable camera will be able to generate a live output.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I dont even remotely know where to begin with that.  Do i need to find a camera with a display port or something and run a capture card?

It may not be necessary to use a capture card. Presumably you already have a camera. Does it have USB, Firewire, or HDMI ports?

I havent bought a camera yet. thats why im trying to figure out what camera I should buy that will let me do this.

The OP indicates that a "better" camera is to be acquired. Is there not a current camera?

just the note 8 she uses now.
