Alright so I’m gonna build a pc with some good stuff, here’s the specs:

Intel core i5 8400

Gigabyte z370 hd3 motherboard

EVGA gtx 10t60 6gb sc

RAM = Trident z g skill (2x8) advertised at 3000 mhz

I know how to set XMP but I have no idea what to set my frequency to. I also I have no idea what to set the voltage to when I do so.

I also heard that you need a mobo that supports overclocking and unlocked processor to overclock ram. Is this true?

What do you need your PC for and what's your Budget/Country?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Yes.

Then probably go for Ryzen, because ASrock has a deal for an RX 580 8GB + Decent B350 board for $299

then used the extra cash to pick up a 1080p 144hz display soon after

Or possibly invest in an R5 2600 now instead of the better display, though the ASrockPro4 might need a BIOS update for the newer CPUs.

If it's not the MicroATX Pro4 you'll need a bigger case, the Masterbox 5 Black is pretty good and cheap.

Huh? I had a question about ram overclocking?

I try to save people from themselves. For $299 it's rather hard to beat a GPU and decent motherboard.

and an RX 580 is going to save you money with free-sync vs G-sync whenever you upgrade your display.

The GN review has results with faster memory, most likely need a Z370 board to do memory overclocking

*you can overclock memory with a locked chip on Z370

Thanks, I am planing to get a z370 chipset for the coffee lake processor. But I have one question: what do I set my frequency of ram to? (Trident Z g skill 2x8 3000 mhz)

Just enable XMP and you should be good, but I'd highly suggest just buying that ASrock Combo and saving some money.
