Hardware vs Software Raid

Generally hardware is better but I guess there are also some instances where you might want to use software. In general hardware is better but you really should use a dedicated RAID card and not use chipset RAID.

quick thing all RAID is software.

Now to answer a RAID card to software it maters what software and what raid card. Some file systems do raid better than most cards other suck, and some 'hardware raid' like that done on a motherboard is just horrible.

Depends what you're trying to accomplish.  Software like zfs or md raid on Linux are more portable across different systems (think transplant).  Not all dedicated cards are created equally either.

I always use hardware raid, but I am old, from the days when software raid was not mature and would corrupt its self if it ran out of CPU.     The main advantage is better performance with writing to NVRAM, rather than waiting for the data to be written to disk.
