i5 8400

HI Guys

MY friend is building a custom PC for a small price, I.e. not having everything top of the range. His CPU is an i5 8400 with a gtx 1070 and 8GB of Ram

He plays Total war series and Ranbow six siege. Should he get a 1440p monitor for to play rainbow at better settings but maybe turn down some settings for Total war? would his CPU be decent in playing a CPU game like Total war?

Anyway, just wanting some better advice from people who know more about this than me :)

A higher resolution monitor will reduce the performance, not improve it ;)

There is no CPU bottleneck here, so there is nothing to worry about. The main bottleneck will become RAM since 8GB is just barely enough for playing games these days, but it should be fine for the most part. The i5-8400 is a very capable gaming CPU.

As in he didn't buy anything yet, as the R5 2600 is likely a better value overall.

1440p is dead, just grab any 4k IPS free-sync display, or 4k TN display, price isn't too much higher usually.

Then just grab an RX 580, and run games at 1080p until next GPUs are out, then you can just run games at 4k whatever.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

The I5 *400 and GTX 1070 will definitely be able to push enough frames to justify a HZ rate in the 120-144 range. For both games he will have to turn at least some of the settings down in order to fully utilize the refresh rate of a monitor in that range.

I'd personally suggest getting the monitor, and then when it is possible for him to perhaps acquire either another ram kit to fully fill his board or to go with a 2x8GB kit.

These two monitors are in the 120hz to 144hz range and are fairly low priced though not the largest monitors one might find
