There's no real disadvantage to overclocking memory.

There's a guide here you can refer to for pretty much all the information: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/773966-comprehensive-memory-overclocking-guide/

for the average user, none

for the overclocker, better frequency, lower latency thus better benchmark results

main disadvantage would be overheating but only in cases with little airflow

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

RAM doesn't usually kick out enough heat to be in danger of that.

If that was a thing, then there would be a real benefit to watercooling memory, and laptops would need better cooling.

It could be risky if you tweak the voltage, but otherwise there shouldn't be any problems. That's for disadvantages.

Advantages on the other hand, depends on the rest of your system. Older CPUs from the early days of DDR3 usually won't see any improvement with faster RAM, so you'd be just increasing power consumption for no reason.

Because DDR3 was popular between 2009 and 2015.  Once DDR4 came around, nobody discussed overclocking DDR3 much anymore because they had already been doing that for six years.

Technically, anything over 1600 is "overclocked" DDR3 if I recall correctly.  And commercially available kits topped out at ~2400.
